How to talk about your work when you can’t name the client

Article Summary

Consultants who are just starting out can leverage their corporate expereince to explain impact if they do not have clients yet.

Let's debunk this myth: we cannot market ourselves until we have public logos, formal case studies, or permission to share specifics.

Simply, this is just not true.

There is a ton you can share about anonymously. Things like:

  • the business context

  • the type of problem

  • the constraints

  • your approach

  • the outcome pattern

It is important to protect confidentiality, but don’t strip out all of the proof.

Try this framework instead:

1. Business context

What kind of company was it? Stage, size, function, environment.

2. Problem

What was breaking, stuck, slow, messy, unclear, or high-risk?

3. Constraint

What made it hard? Lean team, messy systems, no visibility, cross-functional friction, growth pressure, acquisition, etc.

4. Your role

What were you brought in to do? This applies to consulting clients or corporate work

5. Approach

What did you assess, design, implement, or change?

6. Outcome

What changed? Faster decisions, cleaner workflows, better accountability, reduced manual work, stronger reporting, smoother handoffs.

7. Optional proof line

Even if exact metrics are confidential, what directional result can you share?

Here’s an example.

Instead of:

“I helped improve operations for a client.”

Say:

“I was brought in by a founder-led services business that had outgrown its operating rhythms. Decision-making was slow, delivery was reactive, and too much lived in people’s heads. I rebuilt the workflows, clarified ownership, and put a lightweight operating cadence in place so the team could execute with less friction.”

That kind of thing.

Confidentiality should change how you tell the story, but it should not stop you from telling one.

FAQ

How do I demonstrate my expertise if I don’t have clients yet? Leverage your corporate experience. What initiatives did you own or at play a key role in. Identify the problem you solved, how you solved it, and what happened.

Can I use my form employers information? That is not recommended. You can share about the business transformation anonymously though.
